Various cultures use different methods of counting age. This calculator is based on the most common age system, used in most western countries. In this system, a child starts off at age 0 and the age is incremented at each birthday. For example, the age of a person that has lived for 24 years and 11 months is 24 and the age will turn to 25 at their next birthday one month later.
The concept of leap years in the Gregorian calendar can cause some confusion because of the different number of days compared to common years. A leap year has 366 days instead of 365, the extra day being added to the month of February, making it have 29 days instead of the usual 28 days. For people born on February 29 our calculator considers an entire year has passed on 1st of March the next year. For example: someone born on 29 February 2000 will be exactly 11 years old on 1 March 2011.
